国際医療福祉大学医学部 眼科学教室 教授（代表）　臼井 智彦 Chief and Professor　Tomohiko Usui MD, PhD

2017年に本学医学部が開校し、2018年4月に赴任しました。本邦で最も新しい医学部眼科学教室の誕生に際し、初代の主任教授（現在は教授代表）を拝命したことは、大変光栄であると同時に身の引き締まる思いです。

新しい教室ということもあり、現在成田病院眼科には13名の眼科医が在籍していますが、出身医局は5つ（東大、千葉大、東邦大、大阪大、山形大）、出身大学にいたっては12大学とバックグラウンドはさまざまです。多様性、という言葉が相応しい医局員構成となっています。その多様性を武器に、自由闊達かつ風通しの良い医局にしていきたいと考えています。実際にカンファランスは自由に発言できる雰囲気であり、若手の先生が積極的に質疑応答している姿を見ると、将来がとても楽しみです。また本学には国福病院、山王病院、三田病院、熱海病院、高木病院と様々な関連施設を有しており、地域の第一線でご活躍されている先生やORTが多数在籍しています。今後関連病院とも有機的に交流を深め、この新しい眼科学教室のあり方について考えてまいりたいと思います。

成田病院が開院して3年が経過しましたが、まだまだ課題は山積しています。が、各方面から多大なるご支援も賜り、多くの患者様の診療を行うことができるようになりました。成田病院眼科の毎月の紹介患者数は開院以来全診療科の中でトップを誇り、年間2000件以上の手術を行えるようになり、臨床に関しては少しずつ軌道に乗って来たように思います。今後は本学から質の高い研究を是が非とも発信していきたいと思います。臨床研究はもちろん、基礎研究も可能になるよう、整備を進めて参ります。また2023年度からは眼科研修基幹施設として認定され、初めての後期研修医も迎えることができました。良医を育成すべく卒後教育にもさらなる力を注いでいく所存です。

患者様に最良かつ最先端の眼科医療をお届けできるよう、オリジナリティーのある眼科研究を世界に発信できるよう、そしてよき眼科臨床医を育成できるよう、これらも全力で教室運営を進めてまいります。ご指導ご鞭撻のほど、どうぞよろしくお願い申し上げます。

The Faculty of Medicine of the IUHW opened in 2017, and I was appointed to this position in April 2018. It is a great honor and at the same time a sobering experience to be appointed as the first Chief and Professor at the birth of the newest Department of Ophthalmology in the medical school in Japan.

As a new department, the Department of Ophthalmology at Narita Hospital has 13 ophthalmologists who come from 5 different medical schools (University of Tokyo, Chiba University, Toho University, Osaka University, and Yamagata University) and 12 universities with a variety of backgrounds. The word "diversity" is appropriate for the composition of our medical staff. We would like to use this diversity as a weapon to create a free and open-minded department. In fact, the atmosphere of the conference is one in which people can discuss freely, and I am very much looking forward to the future when I see young doctors actively participating in discussion. In addition, our university has various related facilities such as Kokufuku Hospital (Tochigi), Sanno Hospital (Tokyo), Mita Hospital (Tokyo), Atami Hospital (Shizuoka), and Takagi Hospital (Fukuoka), and many doctors and ORTs who are active on the front line of the region are enrolled. In the future, we would like to organically deepen exchanges with affiliated hospitals and think about how this new ophthalmology department should be.

Three years have passed since Narita Hospital opened its door, but there are still many challenges ahead. However, we have been able to treat large number of patients thanks to the tremendous support we have received from various quarters. Since its opening, our department boasts the highest number of referral patients each month among all clinical departments of Narita hospital, and has become able to perform more than 2,000 surgeries a year. In the future, I would like to conduct high-quality research from our university. We will also continue to improve the facility so that it can be used for basic research as well. In addition, since 2023, we have been certified as a core facility for ophthalmology training, and we have welcomed our first post-doctoral resident. We intend to devote even more effort to post-graduate education in order to foster good doctors.

We will do our utmost to provide the best and most advanced ophthalmic care to our patients, to disseminate our original ophthalmic research to the world, and to foster good ophthalmic clinicians. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement.
